In Germany, Bee Pollen has been officially recognized as a medicinal food product by the Board of Health. Our polyfloral pollen is sourced from a range of different flower species, collected by foraging bees. Once attained, the bees combine this pollen with nectar or salivary solution. It is then transported, transferred to and stored within the honeycombs of the beehive, and sealed by a layer of wax and honey. This is referred to as ‘bee bread’, and once sealed begins to ferment, to best preserve the nutritional profile. The bees really know what they’re doing huh?
Normally, a pollen screen is used which has delicate strands of wire which the bees must wiggle in to get through in the hive. When they wiggle through, some of the pollen on their hind legs will be scraped off and drops into a collecting tray at the bottom. They simply think they are returning home!

These consist of a variety of nutrients (proteins, carbs and essential fats), vitamins, amino acids, phenolic compounds, and biological enzymes (Source: Science Direct). This colourful and expansive nutritional profile is the reason that bee pollen is truly a superfood substance.
Antioxidants
Bee pollen has been recently acknowledged for its rich antioxidant potential and capacity to reduce oxidative damage. This type of damage is caused by the build-up of harmful molecules build-up when we eat processed foods, smoke, drink alcohol excessively, fail to regularly exercise, and get anxious or stressed.
If this inflammation is not eradicated by a healthy balance of antioxidants in our diet, they can have negative impacts on the body. Bee pollen is believed to contain a high antioxidant potential offered by the range of flavonoids and polyphenols it contains (Source: CAB). This has been shown to quench or scavenge the build-up of the harmful molecules (reactive oxygen species) that cause the damage.
A recent study reported that the higher polyphenol and flavonoid content, in different types of bee pollen, were in line with an improved ability to scavenge free radicals, a process of antioxidation (Source: Taylor and Francis).
Quercetin
One of the highly beneficial antioxidative substances in bee pollen is Quercetin. This flavonoid has been shown to act in reducing the amount of pro-inflammatory compounds, resulting in a reduction in inflammation – and highlights its potential for recovery (Source: NCBI).
Vitamins
Bee pollen is a source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E, as well as the water-soluble vitamins B1, B2, B6, and C. It is especially touted a rich source of the energy-producing B-vitamins. These act as accompanying molecules for the release and production of energy from the food we eat and will contribute to overall energy levels.
